Want to try on comedy, but not sure where to start? Join us! In this course, we will explore the basics while building your set. More seasoned comics will be invited to share feedback and newer comics will be able to build a set they can be proud of!

Looking for some comedy dorks to deconstruct the sets of famous comics with on a Thursday night? WELL, THIS is the course for you! Each week, we watch a classic or contemporary comedy special with specific prompts. Come to class ready to share things you noticed, approaches, devices, techniques, and more. Appreciate comedy on a deeper level, then scan your own work for our weekly incorporation challenge! Learn from the greats and level UP!

Hosted by Tamale Sepp and Friends on Zoom, the Comedy Gym is made available by Second City every other Tuesday, and is a supportive and enthusiastic environment to present ideas in an open mic format. Comics can work their material and have the option to get feedback after their set. Hello there,

I’m writing in support of Tamale Sepp. We know each other through the wonderful drag community. She hosted a Pride event in Toronto where we first met, and again, at IDKE (International Drag King Extravaganza) where she again hosted. I also had the pleasure of taking her online course through Second City. In our time together, she’s been an incredible host, hilarious comedian, informative teacher, wonderful friend and an all-around fantastic person.

I was referred to Tamale, after asking a client of mine, how to get started in stand up comedy. Despite being always labeled as “Funny”, I’ve never thought of myself as a person who could develop a routine and perform! The Name “Tamale Rocks” is an understatement! Within the first session, we worked on joke/set structure and performance habits, that translate to actual shows. Tamale provided references for study and also provided resources for experience where I could constantly receive real life feedback on my new material, to supplement her own. Tamale’s coaching allowed me to go from a person who would not dare “Go in the water” to performing a full 5 minute set and not “drowning” at a local open mic! I encourage anyone who has ever thought about getting in stage to take the same route I did. I can’t thank Tamale enough for not only being a great person but also building that confidence to what is hopefully a start to a successful career in comedy!

In our time together, she’s been great with teaching our class the right way to perform a stand up set from walking on to stage to walking off the stage. She also genuinely cares about her students, she made herself available to us outside of class and always responded to or questions and concerns quickly and eloquently. She would often stay after class to make sure each students questions and concerns were handled before ending class. She did a great job of directing and structuring the class each week and also being flexible to the situations of other students. She was great at providing helpful examples to each of the lessons and topics we covered in class and her teaching style was enthusiastic, personable, and coherent. In our time together, she’s been extremely insightful on the process of writing material, how to present one’s self in front of an audience, along with providing numerous other guiding principles of the world of comedy. I love comedy and took my very first class in standup comedy with Tamale. It was great – I went from no experience to writing and performing three routines in class. Tamale has a really positive energy and brings a kind approach to comedy, which I think is very unique and a great starting place for any comic – it’s harder to be kind and still funny; many comics get laughs at the expense of others. I took a class with Tamale over Zoom earlier this year, as lockdown started. I was blown away by the quality of the instruction from a relatively inexpensive online class. Tamale was incredibly supportive and tactful of every single student, and we were a diverse bunch. She always had thorough, insightful notes for us, as well as concrete direction on how to write and perform standup. I found her explanations really helpful in demystifying the process. Moreoever, she’s such a good comic herself that she could come up with impromptu additions or directions for our sets on the spot. Truly inspiring.

It was a great pleasure to study with her, and the only reason I haven’t signed up for more classes is that I’m out of work at the moment. (Thanks, Covid!) Here are my thoughts about studying with Tamale.

I had come from a negative experience in a previous course. I was terrified of performing, I had lost self-confidence and I was hopeful that Tamale’s class would be different. From the very first class, her joy and love of teaching were apparent. We were given shows to watch, basic comedy techniques and some guidelines for performing but she trusted us to develop our own voices.

Her feedback is constructive, positive, insightful and it is kind. I felt good about performing and I started to feel good about myself. I really love doing stand-up comedy now and – at the end of this month I am taking another comedy class!

I feel like Tamale encouraged me to be myself and discover what I want to say and what I want to be on stage. I’m so grateful to her. Our class still has an email chain where we check in and support one another, talk about upcoming shows!
